Enjoi Slap article / Franz Lyons

Barkow just called me and told me to check out the Slap Mag site... You might recall that a couple months back the Enjoi team rolled through Columbus while they were on tour.. Franz, Joe and Dan took them around town. Well today there is a tour article up on the website. on page 6 there is an animated sequence of Franz doing a frontside bigspin off the loading dock into the bank. It's really fucking good.
Go here to see it: http://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1749&Itemid=27
Hell yeah Franz!!!

Canal Winchester update

Well...... I went there...It's not done yet. Actually it looks done but I think they're letting the concrete cure.

Gage @ Ollies

Gage Smith posted up a pretty good edit from a recent trip to Ollies Skatepark in Kentucky.

Canal Winchester park

Looks like Canal Winchester got themselves a small concrete skatepark....
"Who? Skates" out of Kennybunkport Maine built the park. It looks really small but it could be fun. I'm hopefully going to check it out tomorrow afternoon if the weather isn't too shitty. The park is only a few miles from where I grew up. Canal Winchester is on the far Southeast side of Columbus. The park is near the intersection of Groveport and Gender roads.

NEW Embassy website / video

Embassy Boardshop has completely redesigned their website. Eric Barkow and Jake Westrick did a super good job. There is a ton of stuff to check out, new products, team page, video section, etc. most definitely worth a look: embassyboardshop.com

EMBASSY VIDEO
Ok, so exactly two years ago, the shop made a video; had a premiere at Carabar and it was never shown again. The video wasn't edited at all until a couple days before the premiere. They managed to throw it together, enough to show at least...In the haste of getting it done one whole section was accidentally cut out (myself, Adam Lowe, Ricky Critchfield & Brenten Turner) and nobody saw it. After that showing the plan was to film more and re-edit it. That never happened and it was decided that it just wouldn't be released. People have been bugging Barkow a lot about seeing the video so with the relaunch of the website, the video is now been added to the site. It's about 20 minutes long and features Gabe Peterson, OJ Hays, Max Palmer, Ben Perkins and has smaller parts by Franz, CJ, Taylor, the whole IGLU crew and other friends.. Mike Newton (me) Ricky, Adam, Brenton, Jeff Trasin, Joe and Dan Charlton, Darius, Yon, Gary,Jerome, Sammy, Shane, Ginger, Steve, Stu, Kaleb, Max G. and a bunch more kids... go to this link to see it:

Flow 12/7

I hate winter. I actually like snowboarding..but just about everything else about it sucks...

Now that the highs are in the 30's It looks like the majority of our skating will be indoors. Last night, myself, the Embassy kids and a few other friends rented out the Flow skatepark. Ben, Taylor, Gabe and Dan killed everything. Dan nearly killed himself; he took one of the hardest slams I've seen in awhile.

Here's a couple of crappy iPhone pics I shot.

CJ: back tailslide up the extension on the mini & Ben: stand up 5-0 on the vert quarter.

Chad Kessler Photos

Chad is one of the more unique personalities rolling around the streets and skateparks of Columbus.. He's a regular contributor to a zine out of Cincinnati called Dead Ramones and the local zine Upper Decker. Here is a short interview and some recent photos.

How long have you been skating?
I was bummed about turning 25 come February until I realized it meant that I had now been skating for most of my life, 12-13 years. Though if you've seen me skate you might guess 2 or 3.
- favorite Columbus skateboarders / people to skate with?
Usually skate with Ricky, OMGB and Nik. I don't like skating around people, I feel retarded. That's why I have a camera.
- When did you start shooting photos?
mm, 9th grade? maybe 8th. Stole my mom's camera and learned how to use it in manual mode, something she still can't do.
- Favorite artists?
Zach Starkey! That dude sucks. Umm, Warhol, Banksy, Basquiat, Pettibon (does all the Black Flag art), James Nachtwey is a sick photographer. I like a lot of stuff. I like the idea of Pollock more than I like his work. I like all the Beautiful Losers stuff but don't know who's who or anything like that. I don't really follow art that much. I love street art like stencils and wheatpaste and may or may not have a couple works of my own around town.
- what was it like getting to Europe and being sent right back? What happened?
That was so lame. They wouldn't let me in because I didn't have a return flight since I had no idea how long my money would last. I had someone to stay with there and had my eurail pass and everything, was only gonna be in England for a couple days. I got sent to this holding room, basically like a jail/waiting room and the only other white guy was another bearded backpacker from Dublin, Oh. They let him in but not me. Luckily I flew Air India which has free meals and drinks in flight so I got loaded on free scotch on the way home. Pretty sure I saw Jaimie Lee Curtis at JFK. Oh, and then the bastards sent me to Akron instead of Columbus so I had to have my aunt drive all the way to Akron to pick me up. Fuck England! When I went back the following fall I flew into Germany and walked right in, hassle free. Overall, yeah, it sucked and was really unreal and strange, felt like a prisoner and flying for basically 24 straight hours in a circle sucks.
- Shout outs?
My friends all know who they are.

Kickstand Mini Ramp

I found this on the Resident Skateboards site... It looks the folks at the Kickstand Pub (8333 Market Exchange Dr., Westerville www.myspace.com/thekickstandpub) are building a miniramp at the bar. Sounds like it'll be done this weekend. I don't know any other details, but there are some pictures of the construction here: http://www.residentskateboards.com/News.html

68 degrees and sunny is strange weather for November.. No complaints here. I shot this picture of Ben Perkins in the back of the old Time Warner building moments before getting kicked out by the Scientologists that now own the place.... between the bars, thigh high 50-50 on the electrical box...

Lazy Sunday 6

Taylor posted a new edit of footage from the last couple of weeks...The skating in this one might be my favorite of the series. I think I filmed almost the whole edit..sorry if it looks crappy. I'm stoked, Adam Lowe has 5 tricks!! Ginger's wallie into the steep quarter pipe is really good.

Hallowesty

This past Saturday I went to the Westerville park to watch some of the "Hallowesty" Contest that the Suburbanthuglife.com guys put on. The rain dried in time and it was windy as hell. But it looked like everyone had fun. All the westerville locals were there. I left before it was over but I believe a kid named Justin Henry won the contest. Westerville's Old Skool and Resident Skateboards were the main sponsors.

Justin Ruh took a ton of photos documenting the day. My favorite is of Pirate Matt doing some sort of wild Christ Air finger flip launcher thing out of the 6ft quarter pipe.... check out: http://suburbanthuglife.com/Fotos.html to see all the pictures.

ENJOI team in Columbus

Friday Afternoon Joe Brook from Slap Magazine & the Enjoi team stopped by Embassy Boardshop in Clintonville. Franz, Joe and Dan then took the guys around the city all day and showed them the spots.. I know they hit up a rail on campus, the White Castle ledge, old Time Warner building and the two ledge spot in Grandview.. KP told me he ran into Weiger in the American Apparel store!

Here are a couple pictures taken from the Slap website... One is Franz in the Van with the team and the other is Weiger at the W.C. Ledge.

What the FUCK is CowTV?

I'm stoked that Shannon & Craig are getting some exposure... But what's up with this fucking interviewer guy?

CowTV goes with The Flow... from cowtvprod on Vimeo.

Chad Knight video thing...

Hopfully you know who Chad Knight is... Columbus (Westerville) Native, moved away YEARS ago, was a big time pro for Maple Skateboards, Osiris, Pig, etc.. He's had some rough times, dropped off for awhile, but he's still around and shredding. He's currently riding for 1031 skateboards...

I found this on the Skateboarder Magazine website today....
(sorry if it looks weird, I can't seem to get it aligned. just go to the website to see it...)

OSU Park footage

A couple weeks ago we showed up to the park and videographer John Thorne was there with an HD camera and a dolly filming the kids skating..we had arrived right before the sun went down hoping to get in a short session. As it started to get dark, John mentioned that he had lights. We ended up skating for about two and a half hours. I'm really starting to like how the park is bringing together very random groups of skaters. It's a central location that is a good place for skaters from all over columbus to meet up. Here is the footage from that day. This is a really good look at the park's setup.

The park is re-paved and they put all the ramps and boxes back in place... All the stuff from the Red Bull Manny Mania contest is now there. Embassy Boardshop worked things out OSU and got Red Bull to donate the boxes. The mini ramp is also being re-built. Looks like it will be better this time. Here is a pic of Taylor skating the new set up.

First; the second annual Grove City contest is happening this Saturday August 29. beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions in both the street and bowl areas.Registration starts at 10 am. Last years contest was pretty fun, I'm sure this year will be the same.
ALSO on Saturday, the third annual Urban Scrawl event is going on at Dodge Park. It's an all day event with art being created on site, local bands and a skate contest/jam at the skatepark. This event has been rapidly growing each year. I'm gonna try to hit up both events at some point...

Chris Higgins!

Chris Higgins is one of my all time favorite Columbus skaters. If there was ever a nicest guy award to be given out; he'd get it for sure...At 36 years old Chris skates more than the average kid half his age, He is a proud new father and has a full work schedule. He's also been teaching skate lessons at the various Columbus skateparks for the last few years.....

Chris gets boards from Five Points and Shoes from Emerica...

Tomorrow August 15th a new Columbus based skateboard company: Resident Skateboards is having it's official release party at the Kickstand Music Festival in Westerville. I don't really know many details about this but you can go to Residentskateboards.com to get more info...it's sponsored by Old Skool and Blueprint and a bunch of beer companies. Old Skool is having a "skate park" there, I'm not sure if it's open fo everyone to skate or if it's a demo.. you'll have to call Wally or Ted to find out.. Add Resident to the ever growing list of local Columbus companies; how many are there now? five??...I just hope they chill out with the logo rip off graphics and skulls with mohawks...

Then on Sunday, The Free Flow Contest series comes to town.. It will take place at the Flow Skatepark. The contest is for skaters 13-21 years old. Check out ridetheflow.com for more info.

Columbus GSD update #1

Ok, so I don't really know anything about these dudes except that they are from Indiana, like skating bowls and they seem to like skulls and monsters...but the Toast Skateboard team will be rolling around Columbus on THIS coming Sunday, June 21st for Go Skateboarding Day.. The flyer says that they will be at Powell and the Flow Skateparks the Powell stop is sponsored by Old Skool skateshop...I have no clue as to why they aren't skating the Westerville park... I've also heard they are supposed to go to the Grove City park at some point..

I believe that Embassy is also having a skate Jam BBQ at the shop on the same day... I should have a flyer soon for that...

Sounds like Sunday will be a good day..

ASA @ Kings Island

Kings Island in Cincinnati was the host to a pro vert contest this past weekend, part of the ASA contest series...I got free tickets to the park so we went down there on Saturday... we mostly just road rollercoasters but managed to watch about 20 minutes of the practice sessions.. I don't know what the the hell the ASA is, and don't really care. PLG, Danny Mayer, Rob Lorifice, and I think Neal Hendrix and Chris Gentry were there...
