Skate Naked re-birth

Construction on the new Skate Naked park is well underway. The original park shut down in July so they could move to this new spot.. I went by there last night to check it out and it's impressive to say the least. Here are some pictures of their progress so far.
Note that these photo's are of ONE room. There are three more rooms that are going to be done as well; a bowl room, mini ramp room and a larger street room. The plan is to finish the first room, then they'll open for business. Adam is shooting to have the park open within 60 days, maybe sooner.
I'm not going to post the address yet, but it's off of 5th Ave on the east side. It took me 7 minutes to get from downtown to the park. Not bad at all.

Go Skateboarding Day 2011

So as you know, today is Go Skateboarding Day! and for the second year in a row Skate Naked is hosting a big party / contest. I'm not totally sure but it might be free to get in..you might want to call first to find out. There are a ton of prizes.. Embassy Boardshop, Alien Workshop and Habitat are the main sponsors... ALSO park local James Weber purchased a $500 gift certificate from Embassy to give away as well as some Insturment decks. He wanted to do it and no one could talk him out of it! I guess he just really wanted to stoke everyone out... The contest is scheduled to start sometime between 3 and 4 PM. aferwards the plan is to get everyone together critical mass style to skate from the park through the streets of downtown and back. Should be a great time.

Also, I've heard that the Flow skatepark on the eastside is holding a free skate session in honor of GSD.

So basically you have no reason not to go skating at some point today!

Here is a new edit I made comprised of a couple clips of Stuart and Austin skating at the Campus park last week. The rest is pretty much all from a trip that myself, Austin, Taylor, CJ and Gabe took yesterday to the Canal Winchester park. We ended up staying there for about 3 or 4 hours and they all got a ton of good tricks. Gabe freakin' killed the ledge.

Chad Knight retires

1031 Skateboards issued a press release earlier today announcing that Chad Knight has retired from professional skateboarding. I hope you know who Chad is. if not, watch the video below and get stoked. Chad grew up in Westerville, moved to San Diego when he graduated and went pro shortly after. Over the years Chad has had numerous board sponsors, H-street, Evol, Maple and 1031 most notably. In the mid to late nineties he was one of the first to have a pro shoe on Osiris. (back then Osiris was HUGE) In the early 2000's he spiral fractured his fibula in what should have been a career ending injury. It took a couple years for him to recover and unfortunately he faded a bit from the spotlight. However he came back and has put out some great footage over the last few years.

The first couple minutes of the video below is almost all from Columbus, Gahanna, Westerville, OSU, downtown and from the old Sunsports Skatepark. Best of luck in the future Chad!

This year's Cowtow Showdown was held at the Skate Naked Skatepark in Columbus Ohio March 5th and 6th 2011.Overall it was a pretty great weekend. I think most everyone had a good time. This is an edit of the highlights of the weekend including the pre-party the Friday night before the event and a demo by Blueprint Skateboards and riders from both Cincinnati brand Insturment and Columbus's Resident Skateboards.
I did my best to capture as many tricks by as many kids as possible. I apologize if anybody did something awesome and I missed it.

This is the second year for the contest as it's part of the Arnold Classic Sports festival in Columbus.

Like last year it's a 2 day amateur contest and pro demo. Unlike last year, it's happening at the Skate Naked Skatepark rather than Vets Memorial downtown. In case you don't know the contest is an offshoot of the Arnold Classic Sports Festival that will pretty much take over Columbus this weekend. Just like last year this weekend is going to be the busiest of the year for Columbus skateboarders. As you know the Cowtown Showdown (Arnold Classic)skate contest is happening again on Saturday and Sunday. I'll post the flyer tomorrow.

To kick off the weekend,Ryan Moya has put together the second "Night of the Living Shred" event/bowl jam/party at Skate Naked. Classic Skate videos will be projected on the walls, there will be a BBQ and skate DJ Anthony Fischetti will be providing the tunes. It should be a great night.

Last night there was a best trick contest @ Skate Naked.
Contests were held on the 2 flat 2, large hubba, shotgun rail, mini ramp and best line on the boxes... later on there was a contest over the fun box but I didn't manage to film any of that...
It was a totally packed house. There had to be at least 200 kids there. Embassy Boardshop, Oldskool, R&R, Domestics, Alien Workshop, Habitat, Zero, Slave, Resident and Insturment all kicked in prizes. The Insturment guys showed up later in the evening and shredded everything. Check out the edit I made below.

Well, in a few hours 2010 will be over. It hasn't been the best year for a lot of people...the economy seems to be hitting a lot of skateshops hard this year. Lots of mom and pop shops all over the country have gone out of business in the last 12 months... Fortunately, Columbus has maintained a pretty strong scene. Kids are skating and the local shops seem to be hanging on. I hope you all realize how important it is to support your local shop and scene in general. I know it's really easy to sit at your computer and order that new deck or shoes from some mailorder site, but keep in mind that shops like Embassy, Old Skool, JP Skate, Black Sheep and Trilogy,R&R most likely have what you're looking for. Beyond that, these guys are the ones supporting the scene, providing demos, video premier's, hosting contests and giving you a place to hang out, meet up, watch videos and more... Also we're also quite lucky to have two indoor skateparks in the city. The Flow on the eastside... Skate Naked in Grandview is constantly upgrading and building new stuff to skate. Resident Skateboards is about 2 years old now... We have the Cowtown Showdown coming up..
None of these guys are getting rich....Ok, sorry to ramble on, I guess my point is I'd like you to stop and think about how great we have it here...2011 should be an awesome year for Columbus skateboarding.

Here is an edit of stuff I filmed at Skate Naked over the last two or three weeks.. It's mostly the Embassy guys and friends. Since Eric Barkow from Embassy LOVES all things Morrissey, I figured that he'd love it if I used "The Queen is Dead" by The Smiths....

Boma party

I guess that last night there was a snowboard video premiere somewhere, I didn't go and I'm not exactly sure where it was..but the afterparty was at Boma Nightclub downtown...the main event was a skate demo on the floor in front of the stage. The skaters consisted of a bunch of Columbus kids...there were a couple grind boxes and a jump ramp to skate. The party was really weird to say the least, a snowboard video playing in the background, skaters and a moderate sized crowd looking kind of bored...Marc-Frank Montoya and some other guys were there. Occasionally some weirdo girls and snowboarder dudes would wander down onto the floor and start dancing on the ramps, providing a majority of the comedy for the evening.. The night pretty much ended when Darius took out a group of the "dancers" like they were bowling pins. I'm amazed it didn't turn into a brawl.
