Final 2010 edit

Well, in a few hours 2010 will be over. It hasn't been the best year for a lot of people...the economy seems to be hitting a lot of skateshops hard this year. Lots of mom and pop shops all over the country have gone out of business in the last 12 months... Fortunately, Columbus has maintained a pretty strong scene. Kids are skating and the local shops seem to be hanging on. I hope you all realize how important it is to support your local shop and scene in general. I know it's really easy to sit at your computer and order that new deck or shoes from some mailorder site, but keep in mind that shops like Embassy, Old Skool, JP Skate, Black Sheep and Trilogy,R&R most likely have what you're looking for. Beyond that, these guys are the ones supporting the scene, providing demos, video premier's, hosting contests and giving you a place to hang out, meet up, watch videos and more... Also we're also quite lucky to have two indoor skateparks in the city. The Flow on the eastside... Skate Naked in Grandview is constantly upgrading and building new stuff to skate. Resident Skateboards is about 2 years old now... We have the Cowtown Showdown coming up..
None of these guys are getting rich....Ok, sorry to ramble on, I guess my point is I'd like you to stop and think about how great we have it here...2011 should be an awesome year for Columbus skateboarding.

Here is an edit of stuff I filmed at Skate Naked over the last two or three weeks.. It's mostly the Embassy guys and friends. Since Eric Barkow from Embassy LOVES all things Morrissey, I figured that he'd love it if I used "The Queen is Dead" by The Smiths....

Boma party

I guess that last night there was a snowboard video premiere somewhere, I didn't go and I'm not exactly sure where it was..but the afterparty was at Boma Nightclub downtown...the main event was a skate demo on the floor in front of the stage. The skaters consisted of a bunch of Columbus kids...there were a couple grind boxes and a jump ramp to skate. The party was really weird to say the least, a snowboard video playing in the background, skaters and a moderate sized crowd looking kind of bored...Marc-Frank Montoya and some other guys were there. Occasionally some weirdo girls and snowboarder dudes would wander down onto the floor and start dancing on the ramps, providing a majority of the comedy for the evening.. The night pretty much ended when Darius took out a group of the "dancers" like they were bowling pins. I'm amazed it didn't turn into a brawl.

Below are a few pics and I made a new edit of footage from the last couple months; including the demo at Boma..

The video will be approximately 45 minutes. ¾ will be all new footage with ¼ being classic and never before seen footage from the last 10 years.

The video should start around 8:30. $5 an additional $5 to skate. There will be some prizes given away for a lucky few...I'd suggest you brush up on your Habitat trivia..

Skate Naked Top Shop Contest

On Saturday Skate Naked held it's first Top Shop contest. I wasn't able to go but I guess it went pretty well. Blacklist from Laurenceburg IN won the Contest, Jp Skate came in 2nd and Old Skool rounded out 3rd place. Resident and Alien Workshop were the main sponsors... The JP guys just posted up a pretty long edit...As long as it is, I think there was a lot of other shredding that didn't get captured. For example, I've heard that the ledge area got destroyed by Taylor, but I don't think I saw a single trick of his on here. I'm looking forward to seeing other edits. I'll post up more of them as I get them..

Late summer edit, 3 Block contest

Last night Skate Naked held a small best trick contest on the newly constructed 3 block section of the park. It was pretty spur of the moment so there weren't all that many people there.. That being said, the skating was still really great. Adam at the park put up $50 cash and Barkow from Embassy matched it with a $50 gift card to the shop. Dan Charlton took it with a wallride down the whole thing... below is a video edit from the past month. Including last night's contest as well as some stuff from the Gatorade Free Flow contest at the Flow last weekend.

Some of them are planning on staying out there for awhile. I think Ben said he's going to try and stay out there indefinetly. Dan will be catching a flight home eventually..

ALL Friday

This friday night is going to be a busy one.. First off there is a benefit show at Ravari Room. There are a bunch of bands playing, but the headliner is ALL! Yes ALL; like all the dudes (except Milo) from the Descendents. Hell yeah. I'm down to sing along and act like a teenager! The show is a benefit for Rob Behler. Rob is a Columbus skater who has been diagnosed with a rare form of terminal lung cancer. Come out support a great cause and enjoy some classic punk rock.
Before or after the show, headover to the Skate Naked Skatepark. The park will be host to the monthly hip hop dance party known as Get Right. These two events are both on the opposite ends of the spectrum I suppose, but they both should be a great time...

Grove City Contest / Kickstand /Skate Naked...July 31st

There are multiple events going on this Saturday July 31st.

At 10 am the third annual Grove City contest is happening at the GC Skatepark.
There will be beginner, intermediate, expert and advanced contests in the bowl & street areas... expect it to be a long one..Sponsored by just about everyone, there should be some great prizes..

ALSO,
Kickstand Music Festival: The Second Annual Kickstand Music Festival is on Saturday as well.. The event is benefiting Pets Without Parents. A non-profit, no-kill, all-breed shelter for dogs and cats. There will also be live music all day and night (inside and outside). Old Skool is building a mini (outdoor) street course, just like last year. There is a $5 cover, but all outdoors proceeds go to Pets Without Parents. NOTE: Outdoors is open to ALL AGES, but indoors is 21 and over only.

Later in the evening, there is an after party at Skate Naked.

So basically there are plenty of things to do this weekend.

Just Kill Me. Summer Edit

This is a compilation of footage I've shot over the last couple months..New York trip, random Skate Naked footage, Skating the DNA ramp, and the 4th of July.

The second half is footage from yesterday at the AGA contest @ the skatepark in Delaware...... New York transplant Pat Rumney completely destroyed the park. Drake hit his head while trying a hardflip down the stair sand ended up going to the hospital. Hopefully he'll be ok soon. Despite that, the day was pretty fun. Had I entered the contest I would have felt a little cheated considering that the whole thing took place on the stairs...That park is really good. It's a shame the kids couldn't use the whole thing. Still, I think everyone had fun.

AGA Contest

It looks like there is a skate & BMX contest at the Delaware skatepark this coming Saturday July 17. I believe it starts at 4 pm. $10 to enter. It's being put on by something called the Agrenaline Game Alliance. I have no idea really what the AGA is... Sounds a bit XTREME...
From their website:
The Adrenaline Games Alliance is a Michigan based company producing original action sports events. ‘The Alliance’ seeks to support future development for action sports athletes as well as emerging musical artists by hosting new events in venues of all sizes. Seeking to compliment the existing action, ‘extreme’ sports properties, the AGA looks to serve as a development system and authority for athletes of all ages and skill levels.

June 21st was the 7th annual national Go Skateboarding Day. Columbus was full of events this year in honor of the Holiday. Most the shops and Skateparks around town participated in some way. There were contests at the Lancaster and Westerville parks over the weekend. On Monday the Flow skatepark offered a free session for the day and there was a contest, BBQ, and party at the Skate Naked skatepark. After the SN event, about 50 kids went street skating around downtown and OSU.
I went to the Westerville Contest and to Skate Naked park.. Check out this edit of the weekend’s festivities…… Embassy, Old Skool, JP Skate, Resident, Habitat,Alien Workshop and Vitamin Water really helped make GSD great this year. I’ve got some photo’s that I’ll try to post up later..

bakerized...

I recently received a facebook friend request from a new Skateshop in Columbus called “Bakerized”. Everyone I know who rides a skateboard seems to have received the same request within a period of a couple days. On the same day I received the request I got a message from a couple shop guys mentioning the same thing, They both thought it was somewhat fishy…
I did a little digging, very little in fact.. but I did find some interesting info… It looks like these guys are a rollerblade shop that has decided to jump into the skate game. This fact is NOT
mentioned on their Facebook page. (link here: http://www.facebook.com/people/Bakerized-Skate-Shop/100000152773913#!/profile.php?id=100000613989060 )

They DO have another Facebook page that DOES… although none of the skateboarders have received a friend request from this one…
(link here: http://www.facebook.com/people/Bakerized-Skate-Shop/100000152773913#!/profile.php?id=100000152773913 )

Here is their bio:
We sell Rollerblades and Rollerblading Clothing, DVDs, Wheels, etc. Company is owned by a dedicated Rollerblader of 13 years.
We are operated by a Rollerbladers. It's what we love! We also just picked up a few skateboard brands for the local shop for those

Skate Naked Dispatch Article

Jerrick, F/S Bigspin

This past Wednesday, the Business section of the Columbus Dispatch did a pretty big article on the Skate Naked Skatepark in Grandview. The article is pretty good. Seemed pretty fair. Adam's interview was good, it was nice to hear some of the history of how the park came to be. Both of the photos are of SN rider/Embassy local Jerrick Beardsley. Nice to see them get some exposure.. Columbus is pretty lucky to have a park like this around. Speaking of that.. I've been slacking lately. I haven't been there in a few weeks. Hopefully if I can shake this cold I have I'll head up there this weekend to skate the new ramp.

The Canal Winchester parks and recreation people have finally opened the park. Taylor and I drove out there yesterday to check it out. It was super crowded.. I was amazed to see how many kids skate that live out there. I grew up about 10 minutes away from Canal and back then I'm not sure if there were ANY skaters... the park is ok. I understand that there was a limited budget, but it's way too small. They did managed to put a lot of obstacles into a tiny space.. The place will be a lot more fun on days that no one is there. Definitely worth checking out, however I know I'll only go there occasionally.

Canal Winchester is on the far South East side of Columbus. From downtown, take 70 east to 33 towards lancaster, turn right at Gender Rd, left on Groveport Rd. The park is 1/4 mile on the left.

It's back. Columbus skateboarding icon Donny Humes has brought Smelly Curb Zine back from the grave yet again. Donny has been doing the zine on and off since the late 80's. Donny was a part of the original Westerville crew, worked at Windbreakers and Sunsports back in the day and ran Dodge park all through the 90's. He's a skateboarder through and through. He moved away a to Georgia a while back but last year he returned to Columbus. This is issue # 40.

Cowtown Showdown contest video

I made an edit of both days from this weekend's contest. Saturday was basically a big skate jam. Arnold Schwarzenegger made an appearance; posed with some kids for pictures and made a speech. Towards the end of the day the Blueprint guys along with Habitat's Fred Gall did a demo. Sunday was the contest. Between the beginner, advanced and sponsored divisions there were nearly 200 kids competing. It made for a really long day..But I think everyone had fun. I'd like to thank Wally and Tedd for managing to pull this thing off. I think that it went pretty well overall. I'm looking forward to seeing how this event grows over the years.

Cowtown Showdown pre-party

On Friday night March 5th there was a pre-party for the Cowtown Showdown entitled "Boards,Bikes and Babes" @ the Kickstand Pub near Polaris... The night was pretty fun. A ton of people showed up. Besides the skaters, the crowd was pretty diverse. The Blueprint guys and Freddy Gall were in attendance. I saw Taylor get in some kind of fight with some rowdy chick and Fred ended up fighting his friend Don towards the end of the night. Check out this video I put together documenting the night....

ARNOLD / COWTOWN SHOWDOWN UPDATE!!!!!

There have been a ton of questions this week about whats happening, when, where to register? etc...

I spoke to Tedd today and he provided me with the answers..

Instead of the Top Shop contest there is a Shop Sponsored / Flow rider division. Personally I think this is a way better option...

Saturday 6th: Pre-Registration: 9am to 4:30 pm

Advanced and Sponsored Open Skate: 10am to 4:30pm

Blueprint skateboard demo: 5:00 to 6:00pm

Sunday 7th: Check in and Registration: 9am to 2:30pm

Beginner warm ups: 9am to 11:30am

Beginner contest: 11:30 am to 1:00pm

Advanced Warm ups: 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Advanced contest: 2:00 to 3:30pm

Sponsored warm up: 3:30 to 4:30

Best trick: 4:30 to 5:00pm

Sponsored Contest: 5:00 to 6:30pm

Winners for all contest announced.

All registration is at the door. There will be tables there that will direct skaters to the right spot in the lobby. If you're in the contest then you get a pass for two days that lets you hang out at skateboarding area and all of the other events for Arnold too. They have a tram that will take people to all of the events. Anyone there to watch the event will have to buy a all events ticket which they can get at the lobby of vets too. That pass is day to day but covers all of the events as well.

So basically if you register on Saturday you get an entire day to practice... Sounds good to me.
